Summary: Ethan Wate used to think of Gatlin, the small Southern town he had always called home, as a place where nothing ever changed. Then he met mysterious newcomer Lena Duchannes, who revealed a secret world that had been hidden in plain sight all along. A Gatlin that harbored ancient secrets beneath its moss-covered oaks and cracked sidewalks. A Gatlin where a curse has marked Lena's family of powerful Supernaturals for generations. A Gatlin where impossible, magical, life-altering events happen.
Sometimes life-ending.
Together they can face anything Gatlin throws at them, but after suffering a tragic loss, Lena starts to pull away, keeping secrets that test their relationship. And now that Ethan's eyes have been opened to the darker side of Gatlin, there's no going back. Haunted by strange visions only he can see, Ethan is pulled deeper into his town's tangled history and finds himself caught up in the dangerous network of underground passageways endlessly crisscrossing the South, where nothing is as it seems.

My Thoughts: Beautiful Creatures was perfect. Really wonderful and even though I haven't read it in a couple of years I remember clearly what has been going on in Gatlin. And with the upcoming movie release, I wanted to refresh my memory. And so here we go.

We are still here in Gatlin, beautiful land and beautiful wording here. The way these women write is terrific, no disappointment there. I think the imagery slowed the story down. Just a smidge. Just a smidge. And so I was a little tired while reading this book. And also, I was a little disappointed with what happened in the book, it didn't seem...magaical. It was just: WTF HAPPENED.

A. WTF HAPPENED TO LENA? Lena, I'm just going to tell you was a complete bitch to Ethan throughout the whole book. THE WHOLE BOOK. I could understand that mourning period, but she took it too far when it just got annoying and you wanted to slap the shit out of her. They were suppose to be in love and this. THIS tore them apart!? Because, "We aren't the same." I THINK YOU SHOULD'VE REALIZED THAT WHEN YOU MET HIM LENA!

B. WTF HAPPENED TO ETHAN!?!? Okay, Ethan is a male narrator, which I enjoy about these books, but through most of this book, he talked and acted like a chick. I didn't feel like he was the same Ethan from Beautiful Creatures, which is one thing I absolutely loved about this series. He was a girl with a guy's name basically.

Oh and another thing, we all know that Lena wears this necklace. And so she loses it and Ethan happens to find it and he picks it up and says, "Is this thing heavier than I remembered, or is it just the weight of my conscious?" Um, no Ethan. I think its just a fucking heavy necklace because Lena keeps EVERYTHING on it so no, no it's not the weight of your conscious.

GOSH.

The side characters are what made the book for me. Link and Ridley's relationship was just...Perfect. I loved their chemistry and Link is just an all around cool character. Olivia was introduced and I loved her British craziness, and I was waiting for her and Ethan to "hook up" for lack of a better word. But it never happened. D:

The fact that there was so much drama romantically made it a little annoying, but hey, that's Beautiful Creatures for you. But it was all about ROMANCE throughout the book and only until the middle of the book do you get to see some revelation of magical beings.

But I really did enjoy it, even if it wasn't my favorite and so I am off to Beautiful Chaos and hopefully Beautiful Redemption if Beautiful Chaos doesn't make me bang my head against concrete.

Happy Readings,
Kandee
